OMAHA HI LO

Omaha Hi-Lo is a poker game that looks similar to Texas Holdem, but in reality is a much different game. The first main thing to remember in Omaha Hi-Lo is that the game is a split pot game. Omaha Hi-Lo, also referred to as Omaha 8, is different than Texas Holdem because you actually get four hole cards instead of two.

In Omaha Hi-Lo you must use exactly two cards from your hand and three from the board, unlike Texas Holdem where you can use any combination of cards. Omaha Hi-Lo is a game of action where a lot of people are in the pot, and a game where you can actually win two pots in the same hand.

What you want to remember when playing Omaha Hi-Lo is that in order to qualify for the low half of the pot, the low hand must be 8,7,6,5,4 or lower. You are permitted to use different cards in your hand for high and low or the same cards for high and low.

When playing Omaha Hi-Lo you have to remember that reading your hand and the board is not as simple as it was in Texas Holdem. There are a lot more possibilities in Omaha and because of that fact it is very likely that someone will be drawing to the nuts. You want to remember when playing Omaha Hi-Lo that strong starting hands are ones that work together. You are not just playing for the high hand in Omaha Hi-Lo, but you are playing for the low end as well. A hand that has A-2-3 in it would be a good starting hand as would a hand with A-K-Q in it. You want to keep in mind that if you have a good starting hand and the flop is the opposite, you immediately have lost your shot at half of the pot and you want to get out. Omaha Hi-Lo is really a game where starting hands are critical. You don't want to be playing mid-range cards. You want cards on either the high or the low end. Medium range cards are unlikely to give you anything for high or low.

The main goal in Omaha/8 or Omaha Hi-Lo is to scoop both ends of the pot. You do this by holding a high hand where no low is possible or by making both a low hand and a high hand. For example, let's say you can make a flush with your AK for the high part, but you also hold the 2-3 to make low as well. Those are the hands that you really want.

As with regular Omaha poker, you want to remember that pairs rarely win, two pairs rarely win, and straights and flushes are very common. You also want to keep in mind that just because you have the high hand doesn't mean you have the low one. Looking at your starting hand requirements is critical in Omaha Hi-Lo; perhaps more so than any other poker game. If you can pick quality starting hands, you have a huge advantage over your opponents who are likely to see the flop with nearly anything. You don't want to be playing in Omaha Hi-Lo after the flop unless you are drawing to the nuts in at least one direction. Remember when playing Omaha Hi-Lo that you need to be selective and disciplined during your play. That is the best tip you can have.
