Tips for Playing Omaha

Playing Omaha is definitely different than playing Holdem, but you still can be successful and you can also have fun if you know some simple tips and strategies.

Omaha Poker is really a game about having the best hand. Texas Holdem is very often a game of bluffing and reads. Omaha is more a game of showdowns. Let's look at some things that will help you the next time you sit down to play Omaha .

Omaha is about having the nuts. You need to be aware at all times what possibilities exist for having the best hand. Learn to read the board and always understand that your hand may not be working toward the best hand. 2 nd best hands lose all the time in Omaha . In Omaha the flop is much more important than in Holdem because much more of the hand is known. You have a very good idea after the flop if your hand has any chance of being a winner. In Holdem you are often left in the dark, even after the flop. Another difference between Omaha and Holdem is that low pairs don't play very well in Omaha . In Holdem you can hit a set and figure to get paid off, in Omaha your set is probably going to be a loser. Drawing hands are extremely common in Omaha so you really want to force people out of the hand when you initial cards are good. The last thing you want to be doing is giving free cards in Omaha .

Omaha is a game of drawing, so remember that normal flops like two pair and a set just aren't that strong. Another difference is that raising is really not that great an idea in Omaha because not much is worth raising. Unless you have Aces or Kings you are better off just seeing the flop. Omaha is much more a game of math than Holdem. Omaha is about having the cards, playing the proper percentages and making the right decisions. Holdem can be more about guts, bluffs, and heart. Omaha does hold some similarities to Holdem in that you still have to vary your play, stick with strong starting hands, and occasionally bluff, but for the most part Omaha is a game about mathematics, and the more you keep that in mind the better off you will be.

When playing Omaha always remember that it is not the same as Holdem. As simple as that sounds, many people forget. Learn to read the board, learn the percentages of making a hand, and concentrate more on the technical aspect of the game. Don't ignore the people, but focus more on what you have, the board, and what the odds are of making the nuts. If you can do that, you will probably win more often than you lose.
