Texas Holdem Multi-Table Tournaments
Multi-table Texas Holdem tournaments are extremely popular around the world today, mainly because that is the only type of poker you see on television. Playing Texas Holdem multi-table tournaments can be exciting, are fast paced, and they can be extremely profitable.
A Texas Holdem multi-table tournament is a tournament that is played at many tables at the same time. A multi-table tournament can have as few as 11 players and can have as many as you see in the World Series of Poker where there are over 6,000 players.
There are many things to consider when playing multi-table tournaments, but the first one you want to remember is time. Many of these tournaments take a long time to play. I would say a minimum of 3 to 4 hours, while others can take a few days to play. You have to be prepared for spending a lot of time at the computer for these multi-table tourneys.
The main goal in a multi-table tournament is to survive. If you can survive, then you can start to get lucky, and once you get some luck, you can actually win. Early in the tournament you really don't have to take a lot of chances. Just play smart and show patience. As the tournament progresses you can make more plays, but early on you need quality starting hands. Early in the round you can see more flops cheaply because the blinds are low, but you don't want to do much unless you hit the flop. Later in the tournament when the blinds are bigger you have to wait for better starting hands, because you can't afford to make a mistake.
In multi-table tournaments when you get big hands bet them strong. You can't be letting other players get in cheap and outdraw you. If you have a big hand make other players pay to see more cards. Keep an eye on other stacks as the tournament progresses but don't get overly concerned about big stacks. They don't seem to win nearly as often as you think. The time to get concerned about your chip size is when the blinds are getting bigger and you must take some chances.
Playing multi-table tournaments is exciting and something every poker player should do when they get the chance. The idea in these big tournaments is to survive, but obviously the ultimate goal is to win. To do that you will have to take some chances, but those aggressive tactics are something to discuss in depth in another article.
